Workshop Description:

Did you know that every second our body unconsciously processes only 0.00000004% of the 11,000,000 bits of information it receives? The billions of stimuli that bypass rational and logical thinking and influence our behaviors and how we navigate the world around us. Answers to questions such as: "Do I trust this person?" and "Is that person competent?"  have already been formulated I even meet a person. That is unconscious bias; a powerful invisible enemy to good intentions.

Even though no one is exempt from its pitfalls, we can take steps to align our unconscious behaviors with our conscious intentions on a personal, social, and systemic level. In this interactive workshop, we will identify the scientific root cause of unconscious bias and develop strategies to combat its negative effects. This workshop is for any interpreter.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

- Name the 4 root causes of unconscious biases

- Identify the impact of manifestations of unconscious bias

- Describe barriers to authentically unpacking bias

- Formulate strategies strengthen the alignment of behaviors with intentions

FAQ

What is the dress code?

The dress code is Black-tie! Tuxedos and floor-length gowns! Don’t be afraid to wear COLOR or PATTERN- this is a night OFF!

Can I bring my partner who doesn’t know ASL?

YES. Please bring a plus-one to celebrate the evening with you! We plan for the night to be accessible to all. There will be lots of interpreters around if needed ;).

What are we celebrating?

YOU! Our organization has hit a milestone- 50 years; that’s half a century! We could not have made it without our members, who are also our leadership, our committee chairs, the people who read the emails we send out, the people who’ve kept the wheels turning all these years!

Can a non-FRID member buy tickets?

Only FRID members can purchase tickets as this is a members-only event; but we do not expect your Plus-One to be a FRID member.

Will there be dancing?

Yes! We will have a D.J. Dancing and eating are basically the entire agenda.

Will there be CEUs?

NO! This is not a workshop. While networking is bound to happen with a room full of niche professionals, this night is about FUN. See last question ;).

What should I bring?

I.D. will be needed for check-in and cash/card for purchasing any alcoholic drinks from the cash bars.

For any necessary accommodation requests, please email pdc@fridcentral.org at least 14 days before the start time of the event.
